Pharmaceutical Preparations That Contain Hydrogen

Hydrogen is one of the most abundant chemicals in the universe, and one of the most used industrial gases, with applications in various industries. The pharmaceutical industry is one such industry which has been utilizing hydrogen in its miscellaneous processes of synthesis for centuries. Pharmaceutical manufacturers often have hydrogen generators and hydrogen plants on their manufacturing premises, as they require it on a daily basis for production. Here, have a look at the different hydrogen containing pharmaceutical preparations and their uses:

·       Hydrogen Peroxide (HO₂)
Preparation: Hydrogen Peroxide is prepared by a catalytic reaction of hydrogen (H) with oxygen (O₂).

Uses: Hydrogen peroxide is mainly used as a disinfectant used to clean wounds. It stops small vessel wound bleeding, and is also used in oral hygiene.

·       Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO)
Preparation: Sodium Bicarbonate is prepared using the Solvay process, which is a reaction of sodium chloride, ammonia, and carbon dioxide in water. Hydrogen is a key ingredient in sodium bicarbonate, which imparts it its antacid properties.

Uses: Mostly used as an antacid to soothe stomach acidity, it is also used as a method of treating medical conditions such as ulcers, kidney stones, high blood pressure, heart disease and swelling of the face or other parts of the body.

·       Boric Acid (HBO)
Preparation: Boric acid is prepared through a reaction of borax with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.

Uses: Boric acid is a very weak germicide. Due to its non-irritating properties, it can be applied to sensitive areas such as the cornea of the eye. It is used as an aqueous solution in eyewash, mouthwash, and the irrigation of the bladder.

·       Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Preparation: Hydrochloric acid is prepared by combining chloride with hydrogen.

Uses: Hydrochloric acid is officially classified as a pharmaceutical aid used as an acidifying agent, and is used in achlorhydria (a medical condition or disorder involving the absence of hydrochloric acid in the gastric secretions.)

Most nitrogen and oxygen gas plant manufacturers in India are also hydrogen plant manufacturers. The hydrogen generators manufactured by these companies utilize CarboTech CMS (carbon molecular sieves) in their PSA processes to manufacture hydrogen (or nitrogen). PSA or pressure swing adoption extends the shelf life of the gases.
